Visitor Pontoon and Moorings

The Harbour Commission has recently provided a new pontoon for the benefit of those who wish to visit Teignmouth and be able to spend a little time in this historic town and harbour.

The Jubilee and Trafalfar Pontoons are moored in a convenient position just off Teignmouth’s river beach where there is a depth of 2.5 metres at chart datum.

They are 20 metres in length and can provide up to 10 berths depending on the size of craft and weather conditions.

They are marked “Visitors Pontoon” on the Admiralty Chart and in the Almanac.

The charges are £1 per metre per night (inclusive of VAT) payable at the Harbour Office.

During peak periods temporary moorings may also be available.

Whether you are berthed on the pontoon or on a mooring you will need a dinghy to get ashore.

It is recommended that contact is made with Harbour Master prior to arrival to check on availability of berths and also to seek navigation guidance on entry into the harbour. (Telephone 01626-773165)

Public Launching Sites

For those who have their craft on trailers there are two public launching sites within the town.

The main site is at Polly Steps which is just upriver from the docks and is accessed via the rear of the dock complex.

This is a concrete slipway and has facilities for parking of trailers and cars. There are seasonal toilets and fresh water is available.  Proof of craft insurance may be required.

Launching is restricted at low water.  The second site at Gales Hill is situated immediately down river from the dock complex. Launching access is via the beach. There are limited facilities but there is a car park opposite this site.

A launch site is also available at Coombe Cellars, two miles upriver from Shaldon, which is suitable for small craft and dinghys and is mainly used by the local waterski club and dinghy sailing club.

However there are tidal restrictions so tide tables need to be consulted before deciding to use this site. The Harbour Master can provide further details and advice if these are needed.

Public Jetty & Landing

There are public landing steps available on Fish Quay which is a short distance from the Jubilee Pontoon.

These dry out at low water.

Access to and landing on the river beach is unrestricted.

Showers, Toilets and Laundry

There are public showers and toilets on the Den which is a short distance from the back beach. These are open between 8am and 8pm during the low season and 8am to 10pm during the high season and are supervised by an attendant.

There are also public toilets on Brunswick Street and at the Point which are open during daylight hours. There is a laundrette in George Street which is open seven days a week between 7am and 7.30pm.

Fresh Water

Fresh water taps are situated:

* in the corner of the Den Point Lower Car Park.
* at Polly Steps

Water can also be obtained from The Brigantine in Shaldon

Fuel

Diesel and petrol are available in the town and can be obtained from County Garage which is a 15 minute walk from the harbour.
Summer opening hours are 0730 to 2200.
Winter opening hours are: 0730 to 2000.

Marine diesel can be obtained from Chris Humphrey’s Boat Yard which is located above the bridge on the Teignmouth side of the river.

The yard is open mornings only from 0830 seven days a week.

Waste Disposal

There are a number of bins provided for the disposal of rubbish. These are situated at :

The Point
Lifeboat Lane
Ivy Lane
Harbour Masters Office
New Quay
Fish Quay
Polly Steps

Litter or rubbish must not be disposed of in the estuary.

To maintain high water quality no sewage must be discharged into the estuary especially as it is a bathing and a major shell fish producing area.
“It is an offence to dispose of sewage or rubbish in the estuary”

Limited oil disposal facilities are available at Polly Steps but please apply to the Harbour Master.

Restaurants, Shops and Pubs

Teignmouth has a good range of shops and fresh provisions can be obtained from a variety of outlets in the town.  There are also many interesting pubs and wine bars as well as plenty of places for eating out or takeaways. All are within easy walking distance of the harbour and river beach.

Shaldon has several pubs and restaurants and is worth visiting. The village can be reached by Ferry from the river beach.

It is also worth visiting Coombe Cellars and the Passage House Inn both of which are up river and accessible by boat.  Obviously it is necessary to check tides and weather before setting out plus the guide to the upper estuary.

Detailed information accommodation, events and places to visit can be found at www.southdevon.org.uk
