Harbour News Update  Summer 2008

The Commission is very pleased to welcome Commander David Vaughan who took up the appointment as Teignmouth Harbour Master on Monday 21.4.08

The recent press release quoted him as saying:

”I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed as the new Harbour Master of Teignmouth. I have spent my whole life working  in, on and by the sea and I am really looking forward to working for the Harbour Commission, the harbour team and among people who have an interest in the sea, the estuary and the harbour”

He joins a dedicated team who have worked hard and have collectively successfully managed the day to day operation of the harbour over the past few months. In addition they have extended the range of services available to our customers. A big “thank you” to the team, pilots and commissioners alike, for all their support over this period of time whilst awaiting the arrival of the new Harbour Master.

The Commission also welcomes Peter Brooks, a new member of the team who brings with him a range of skills and experience which will be a great asset to the harbour operation.

The new pontoon is about to be delivered and will be moored astern of the two existing pontoons. The new pontoon is a dedicated berthing pontoon and provides much needed mooring space for local deep keeled vessels. As previously announced, there will be some minor repositioning of the pontoons to make sufficient space for safe mooring and manoevouring.

The new moorings system is working well with all applications now processed and the mooring licence stickers are currently being issued.

Just a few pre season reminders:

All mooring holders are to display their permits on their vessels where they can easily be seen so that there is proof that the vessel has a current mooring licence and to easily identify the vessel and owner in case of an emergency or problem occurring.

Those owners with concessionary or prescriptive right moorings or trots have also been asked to display permits so that their vessels can be readily identified as well in case of any problems. These are provided free of charge at the harbour office.

With the number vessels in the harbour and estuary easy identification helps the harbour staff considerably in the safe operation of this busy waterway especially when vessels break adrift which does happen from time to time.

Good progress was made last year with the majority of boat owners with outboard engines covering their props to avoid damage to other vessels when moored.  Let’s try and make it even better this year to make the harbour safer and to avoid causing any damage.

The painting of mooring numbers on buoys is improving but there are still many that need to be marked up properly. Again it just helps everyone if the mooring is clearly identified as it saves considerable time and effort when queries are raised with the harbour office or staff.

If you would like any help in placing your mooring number onto your buoy please contact the harbour office who will be pleased to help.

The New Harbour Office which is located on the Old Quay at the entrance to the port is proving a great success bringing everyone together in one location and also providing a focal point for the various meetings which take place.

Many customers have visited the office already and the Old Harbour Office on the New Quay will be open once the season gets underway.

Other News.... The Commission now supplies the riser chains and fittings for the deep water moorings. It is hoped that by using certificated standard chain sizes we will be able to manage these moorings more efficiently and safely in the long-term. This replacement process could take several years to complete.

Once again we would like to remind all users of the estuary that they should ensure their views in this ever changing world are represented to the Commission, this is best achieved by joining one of the many user groups and being represented through the Consultative Body.

The Commission meets regularly on a monthly basis to discuss the various issues and activities, which are important to the management of the harbour. To give a greater visibility to the workings of the Commission it is intended to give a monthly summary of the outputs from the regular meetings, which could be of interest to the community at large. These will be in note form and hopefully will give an insight to the issues and actions being taken.

The summaries can be found on the Information Directory. (Click Here)
