News and Events – Winter 2009
Fred Pearce joined us in July as a Harbour Assistant and to take over as skipper of the Teign C. Pete Brooks left us in mid September to go fishing after a very successful year as a Harbour Assistant and Teign C Skipper and we wish him every success.
Our Harbour staff consist of Harbour Master: David Vaughan; Harbour Assistants: Humphrey Vince (Moorings), Jason Bunce, Fred Pearce (Teign C) and our office staff Suzanne Nicholson, Jayne Orchard and Judith Burridge (Harbour Administrators).
We have now been at Old Quay House for nearly two years and our old lower office on New Quay is now being rented out and Tozers no longer provide services for us. Please make sure that all correspondence is sent to our new address The Harbour Office, Old Quay House, Old Quay, Teignmouth, TQ14 8ES.
There has been a recent spate of thefts of fuel, fuel tanks and small outboard motors from moored vessels in the Teign. DC Theft Deterrent We would advise that wherever possible you remove portable items from your boat when it is not in use and that you clearly mark your portable fuel tank with your mooring number as a minimum, that way if your tank is stolen and then found, once its contents have been removed, we can at least return the tank to you. Please contact us if you require further information or to report any concerns but we now have a Radar and a CCTV system which has recently been installed to monitor the harbour and its approaches hopefully making it a safer harbour for Commercial and Leisure users.
Our Registration Scheme has worked well this year and a thank you to all of you who registered.
This year we have seen an increase in visitors to our harbour and with more positive advice about getting in and out of Teignmouth in the Port Guides, further advice being available on the website and on the telephone and new credit/debit card facilities in the Harbour Office; we hope that we have helped to improve the accessibility of Teignmouth.
Paperwork and invoices for mooring holders for the 2010/11 season will be sent out in the first few weeks of January next year. Please either pay your mooring fee or contact the Harbour Office by 31st March otherwise we will automatically assume you do not want your mooring and will allocate it to someone on the waiting list. Our Waiting list for a deep water maintained mooring is still 5 years for a mooring below bridge and for a non maintained drying out mooring about a month.
The Teign C has been out of the water for over three months for a successful refit at Galmpton but is now back in full operation as a Harbour Tug and Plough Dredger.
Channel dredging and mooring maintenance continues over the Winter months and a number of people have taken up the option of Winter moorings. Visit our website for more details and you can now view the Chairman’s Statement and our Annual Accounts there too.
October 2009
Commissioner Mark Rowe has been appointed to a senior position within Sibelco and therefore has decided to step down at the end of the year as he will not be able to devote the time to the Commission.
We offer him many congratulations to his new appointment and will therefore be seeking his replacement.
If you feel you meet the requirements detailed in the advertisement please print off an application form and send it to the harbour office. The closing date for applications is 13.11.09.
It is hoped to hold the interviews at the end of November or early December with an appointment from 01.01.10.

Summer 2009
The busy holiday period is now upon us and much preparation and planning has been completed in order to welcome our visitors and to enable everyone to enjoy the harbour and estuary safely.
The visitor pontoons have been refurbished and serviced and are ready to receive visiting vessels.
The article in the recent edition of the Royal Naval Yachting Association extolling the virtues of the harbour and encouraging yachtsmen to call in is worth reading.
Much progress has been made in servicing our many mooring holders in answering queries and sorting out problems. New mooring allocations for those on the waiting lists is progressing and a real effort is being made to allocate as many as possible in order to get people afloat for the summer.
There are a number of temporary moorings available for visitors wishing to use their craft while on holiday and the Harbour Office will do their best to accommodate these needs if they are called or emailed.
Those who are launching their vessels from trailers etc primarily from Polly Steps , Gales Hill or Newton Abbot Town Quay and who do not have a mooring or are not registered members of Teign boating organisations are encouraged to register their vessels with the Harbour Commission. See Local Notice to Mariners.
The buoyage above the bridge has been cleaned and checked so the navigable channel is clearly marked but the paragraph under “navigation” should be read for those who are not familiar with the river.
The yellow buoyage off the main beaches at Dawlish, Teignmouth and the Ness mark zones that are dedicated to bathers and has been laid by us for Teignbridge District Council; it is worth knowing the requirements of these zones by reading the Water Users Guide on the “navigation “page.
The Harbour Masters RIB has been fully serviced and will be operated during all the busy periods of the season including every weekend to ensure safety of navigation, good seamanship and responsible behaviour.
The Teign C is currently undergoing her annual refit and will shortly be returning from Galmpton to continue her operational role of plough dredging the entrance channel.
The pilot boat the Syd Hook in addition to her normal duties has been providing services (mail, victuals, stores, crew changes) for the ships anchored or laid up in Lyme Bay.
We hope you all have a good summer season and we will endeavour to maintain a high standard of safety and meet the needs of the harbour users where ever possible.
The harbour team do provide a wide range of cover but are unable to be everywhere all the time.
If there are issues that you think we need to be aware of please call the Harbour Office or give us a call on VHF Channel 12 and let us know.
